Learning and the Curriculum

The Wellington Academy will give students the skills that will provide them with a wide range of employment and social opportunities. There will be a broad and rich curriculum with first class teaching and strong, inspirational leadership.

The specialist subjects will be Business and Enterprise and Modern Foreign Languages.

These have been chosen because they will open up global opportunities for students. The sponsor, Wellington College, will also provide international perspectives through the work it already undertakes through charitable projects in the developing world.

Languages equip young people with the skills to communicate within an increasingly diverse population to foster new relationships and to create new economic and social opportunities for themselves and others.

The Wellington Academy will forge links with existing and new business partners to enable practical and vocational studies to take place and to make a real contribution to the local community.

Personalised pathways for every learner will be supported by cutting edge ICT and extension programmes for young people who need additional support or who are gifted and talented and need to progress at an accelerated rate.

In addition to normal curriculum opportunities, all pupils will have the chance to:

  • Attend a residential course during their time at the Academy;
  • Be supported in achieving the ten opportunities listed in the student charter introduced by professor Tim Brighouse

Before I am sixteen I will have had the opportunity to achieve the following:

  • Have my say on local issues and be listened to;
  • Celebrate my academic, sporting or creative talents — at school or outside;
  • Take part in a public event - either sports, dance or concert or visual arts;
  • Take part in a play, musical or reading that involves either acting, speaking or helping with the production;
  • Go on a school visit or overnight stay;
  • Help others through voluntary work;
