DukeBox Radio Awards Evening

On Tuesday 1st May was the DukeBox Radio Awards Evening, held here at The Wellington Academy. DukeBox is the official radio station for the wellington family of schools which are based here in Tidworth, as well as Berkshire, Tianjin, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Bangkok. The Radio station was set up as a way of connecting all of these schools across the world, and makes us the only secondary school(s) in the world to have a 24 hour a day station for it's students. It offers them a brand new experience that they can't get anywhere else, as well as also being a valuable educational resource.

The evening was for rewarding the students who come in and present an hour long show every single week. Pupils ranging from the ages of 2-18 years old who have all been on the radio in some capacity, most of which also know how to use all of our broadcasting equipment. This is all done through enrichment lessons, a timetabled period in the week where students try out different extra-curricular subjects. Radio is one of them.

All students got certificates for their contributions to the radios success, and a select few got awards for extra reasons. Congratulations to:

•Jack Brett & Casey Oatley (Year 11) - Best Specialist Show for 'The JC Rock Show'
•Aaron Goodall (Year 9) - Most Hardworking Student
•Adam Bailey & Harvey Perry (Year 7) - Best Double Act
•Toby Bridle (Year 8) - Most Creative Show for 'Memes & Music'
•Beanie Hill (Year 7) - Best Presenter

We also used this opportunity to officially open our state of the art studio here in the academy. The ribbon was cut by the Master of Wellington College and Chair of the Wellington College Academy Trust, Julian Thomas.

Other special guests included Abrilli Phillip (Executive Head of TWA), Lt Col Simon Doyle (Commanding Officer of 26 Engineer Regiment), Gordon Moody & Gary Prince (Aster Housing), Katie Breathwick (Classic FM Presenter) and of course, all of our students and their parents. Special congratulations were also offered to the students by the Mayor of Tidworth, Tidworth Garrison Command Lt Col Jamie Balls and the Local MP for Devizes Claire Perry who unfortunately couldn't make it.

The winner of our 'Best Presenter' award Beanie, also got to interview both Julian Thomas and Abrilli Phillip live on the air in front of our live audience. She did this perfectly, like a true radio professional.

Elliott Sharman (DukeBox Radio Station Manager) had this to say:
I'd first like to say a massive thank you to Aster Housing, The Wellington Academy Catering Staff and Andy Powell as without them, we wouldn't have an awards evening or such a beautiful studio. But most importantly, i'm extremely proud of all our students. Every week they come in to the studio, get their heads down and produce incredible content for the air. That's what this evening was all about, celebrating the fact that they're capable of doing things that your average teenager isn't. I'm proud to be a part of something that has the potential to become a normal part of, not just our curriculum, but every school's in the country. It gives pupils massive confidence boosts and teaches them key skills like planning, public speaking and how to cope under pressure. Things that your everyday subjects do not. It's revolutionary, and we're very proud to be the first.
