Expectations & Sanctions

Rewarding Positive Behaviours

Students at the Academy are assigned to houses and they work to achieve house points which result in rewards both for them and their houses. Each student is expected to always wear their house lanyard and student ID in the school building as well as carry their conduct card. Conduct cards allow staff to recognise and reward positive behaviours around the school. These behaviours are linked to the PROUD expectations of politeness, respect, being on time, uniform, and dedication to their learning. Once they have filled up, this is worth 20 house points that the tutor is expected to log on Arbor each morning during tutor. These are then tallied up for house competitions, year group competitions and termly reward assemblies to drive the incentive to be a positive member of the community at The Wellington Academy. Rewarding students’ work and attitude is an essential part of promoting learning, and aspirations. Students have multiple opportunities throughout the year to gain additional points and at the end of the year the House Cup is awarded.

Managing Negative Behaviour

The reverse of the conduct card is used for recording negative behaviours around school for Equipment, Punctuality, Uniform/Kit and Conduct. Students are checked every morning for correct uniform and equipment inclusive of black pen, green pen, pencil, ruler, rubber, calculator and phone pouch. This is to alleviate the pressure on staff to provide equipment and avoid negative confrontation on how students present themselves throughout the school day. Once a student accrues 5 negative signatures, they will receive a same day lunch detention issued by their tutor. Should a student lose their conduct card/lanyard they will also receive a same day lunch detention. Should they not attend the lunch detention, this is automatically a C1 detention (1 hour) after school with a 24 hr delay. Should they not attend the C1 detention, this is automatically a C2 detention (1hr 30min) after school. Should a student fail to attend their lunch, C1 or C2, this escalates to a C3 detention on a Friday with a member of SLT (2 hrs). Should the student fail to attend this, it is escalated further to an Internal Exclusion or could lead to a possible suspension for continual failure to follow the school code of conduct.

Our system for managing negative behaviour is based on an escalated consequence system which is clearly outlined in the Choose To Learn Behaviour for Learning ladder (see below). If a student is disrupting learning, the teacher should initially speak to them and ask them to correct the behaviours. At this point, they should be using de-escalation techniques and other teaching techniques to support the student in making better choices. If the student continues, formal warnings can be issued where names must be written clearly on the board with enough processing time between each warning for the students. Students can have 2 formal warnings in a lesson. Should a student need a further escalation, they are then sent to the Reset Room to stay for the remainder of the lesson, the next lesson and a social time. Being sent to reset during a lesson automatically triggers a text sent home and a C1 detention the following day. It is then the responsibility of the classroom teacher to contact home and discuss the behaviour displayed in the lesson which led to the removal and attend the detention the student has been set to have a restorative conversation. This communication and practice is imperative to the Choose to Learn strategy. In addition to this, the Academy operates an on-call system for staff to use if they believe a student’s behaviour is unsafe or causing sufficient disruption to prevent any learning from taking place where a member of staff will attend to support if required. This is an escalated behaviour and will therefore incur a higher sanction of a C2 and above.

If a student arrives over 5 minutes late to a lesson, this is a score on their conduct card for Punctuality. If a student has not arrived at the lesson within 10 minutes, this, however, is not a punctuality mark but a choice and therefore will require the teacher to log the L3 Truancy which will automatically set the C2 detention.
